West Stockwith Gravel Ride

  • Distance: 35 mi / 56 km
  • Elevation: 633 ft / 193 m
  • Difficulty:Medium ride

35 miles with 2/3rds off road on a real mix of surfaces from wide gravel tracks to grassy single-track. The route is very scenic, following the River Idle and the Chesterfield Canal. From Tickhill we head out towards Bawtry then Misson, Westwoodside and to The Idle Brewery/ White Hart in West Stockwith for a relaxed lunch and liquid refreshments. Sandwiches and light bites are available from a plentiful menu. We then join the Chesterfield Canal all the way back to Drakeholes. Further off road sections from Mattersey into Scrooby before returning back to Tickhill. Although pretty flat and 35miles this ride should not be underestimated. There are some tough going sections at times and about 5 minutes of walking involved. However this is a lovely scenic ride full of wildlife. This will be a ride to take a deep breath - forget Strava segments - and just enjoy a steady bicycle ride, soaking up the surroundings and enjoying a relaxed beer (other beverages available) and lunch at The Idle Brewery/White Hart. 4-5hrs Cycling PLUS lunch and plenty of stops to admire the surroundings on the way around, a reasonable level of fitness required, a gravel / hybrid / touring bike the perfect weapon of choice - tyres over 35mm recommended that can cope with off road conditions.
